Which experiences represent real mountaineering on Monte Rosa?
Capanna Margherita is an unforgettable experience and a goal sought after by many mountain enthusiasts.
However, for those who have already conquered this suggestive peak and wish to push themselves towards a more authentic mountaineering, the Monterosa massif offers several alternatives that embody the true spirit of real mountaineering.
When Margherita becomes the starting point
If you reached Capanna Margherita in a reasonable time and felt comfortable during the climb, it means that you have the technical and physical basis to face more demanding challenges.
The Margherita, despite its indisputable beauty and the charm of its extreme position, of its history, remains essentially a long climb, but not a technical one.
The four proposals that follow will instead take you into the world of real mountaineering.
Castore (4,226m): the first step into the mountaineering world
If you have already experienced Capanna Margherita and feel the call of high mountain climbing, climbing Castore is your next natural goal.
Castore is one of the most elegant climbs in the entire Alpine range. This twin peak of Pollux requires ice climbing skills.
The normal route starts from Quintino Sella Refuge (3585 m) and crosses the Felik Glacier, with a varied and challenging route.
The final ridge, sharp and airy, requires concentration. But it is never excessively difficult, even in its steepest and most technical sections.
The beauty of this climb lies in its completeness: it is not a simple walk on a glacier, but a route that tests basic technical skills.
The view from the summit, with the Matterhorn, the Breithorn, the Mont Blanc chain, the Rosa peaks dominating the horizon, amply repays the efforts.

For the curious:
Their name comes from the two Gemini Castor e Pollux, two Greek and Roman mythological figures, twin brothers often associated with brotherhood, courage and the protection of sailors and knights.
The story of Castor and Pollux symbolizes brotherly love, courage, protection, the union between mortal and divine.

Lyskamm Nose (4,272m): Ice technique
The Naso represents one of the most beautiful and formative ice climbs in the Rosa Massif.
This route requires mastery of steep ice technique and the ability to move as a team on fairly exposed terrain.
It is not a climb for beginners, but it is not prohibitive for those who have consolidated the basics of mountaineering.
The climb offers a beautiful view of the two Lyskamm, Eastern and Western, and the glaciers of the Felix and del Lys
It is a climb that teaches and shapes, leaving a deep mark on those who tackle it.

Parrot (4,432m) and 4000: 4 4000 in 2 days
Punta Parrot and the 4000 m peaks of Rosa perhaps represent the ideal balance between accessibility and true mountaineering character.
The real climb starts from the Gnifetti Refuge, where you can sleep the first day to acclimatize and prepare for your adventure.
The morning will start with reaching Parrot (4434 m).
You will then climb up the Ludwigshohe peak (4342m) and descend to the Zurbriggen pass to climb the Corno Nero (4321m) where you will follow the short but exciting final ridge with black rocks.
The descent will take you near the Balmenhorn rocks with the iconic statue of Christ of the Peaks (4037m), before returning to the Indren peak.
What makes Parrot special is the feeling of isolation and wilderness it offers, despite its relative proximity to the facilities.
True mountaineering requires emptiness, and this experience can give you that.
It is a peak that makes you feel like a true mountaineer, far from the crowds and immersed in an authentic glacial environment.
