Off-piste skiing for families: safe, fun, and unforgettable

Level: begs – adv
Season: Winter
Duration: 3 days
Participants: 7

My goal

Monte Rosa isn’t only about bold lines and steep descents — it’s a place where families can truly experience the mountains together.
Our freeride for families programme combines learning, sharing, and the pure joy of moving through snow, always with awareness and respect for the mountain environment.

Across three unforgettable days, you’ll explore the wide, gentle slopes between Alagna and Gressoney, guided by UIAGM-certified mountain guides who know every valley and couloir. Each descent is carefully selected to match the group’s skills, creating a perfect balance between the thrill of off-piste skiing and the safety and comfort every family needs.

This family freeride experience is both educational and emotional. You’ll learn to move confidently on variable terrain, to read the snow, and to handle avalanche safety equipment correctly. Between runs, there’s time to stop in cozy mountain huts, enjoy a hot chocolate, talk about decision-making in the backcountry, and share the rhythm of skiing, laughter, and discovery in fresh powder.

For us, freeride for families means freedom with responsibility.
At the end of these three days, you’ll not only have skied memorable lines but also built confidence, awareness, and lasting memories together — as a true mountain family.

See the Monte Rosa webcams live and get real-time snow and weather updates across Alagna, Gressoney, and Ayas.

Mountaineering, ski touring, off-piste skiing and trekking take place in a natural, uncontrolled environment.
Weather conditions, snow, ice, terrain, visibility, altitude and physical fatigue can change rapidly and directly affect the course of the activity. For this reason, there is always an inherent level of objective risk, which cannot be eliminated but only managed.

All our activities are led by IFMGA Mountain Guides and Certified Hiking Guides (AMM).
The guide continuously assesses environmental conditions and the physical and mental state of participants, sets an appropriate pace, manages progression and ensures the correct use of equipment. If conditions require it, the guide may modify the itinerary or interrupt the activity, always in the interest of individual and group safety.

Participants are required to be in good physical and mental condition, adequately prepared for the level of the activity, and to follow the guide’s instructions at all times.

Group activities

During group outings, the pace is set according to the slowest participant. In case of fatigue or discomfort, the guide may decide to adjust the programme or return early. In the mountains, the group ascends and returns together.

Yes — it’s suitable for children aged 10 and above who are confident skiing on red slopes. The terrain is carefully selected to ensure both safety and enjoyment for everyone.

No, not at all. Your UIAGM-certified guide will introduce you step by step to avalanche awareness, snow reading, and the correct use of safety equipment.

FAQ #3 – Will we use ski lifts or skins?

Most of the programme relies on ski lifts. Short skinning sections may be included depending on snow and weather conditions, always adapted to the group’s level.

Yes. Avalanche safety gear (transceiver, shovel, and probe) is included. Skis, boots, and other personal equipment can be rented in Alagna upon request.

FAQ #5 – What happens if the weather is bad?

If conditions are unsafe or unfavourable, the itinerary will be modified, moved to another area, or rescheduled. Your guide will always decide with safety as the top priority.

FAQ #6 – Can we join with another family?

Yes, small groups can be combined if skill levels are similar. This helps keep the experience balanced, enjoyable, and safe for everyone.

FAQ #7 – How should we prepare?

We recommend a basic level of physical fitness and good control on red slopes. Some warm-up skiing before the course will help you get the most from the experience.
