Capanna Gnifetti or Rifugio Mantova? Which Hut Should You Choose for Climbing Capanna Margherita?

Planning to climb Capanna Margherita and wondering whether to sleep at Capanna Gnifetti or Rifugio Mantova? Here’s how the two huts differ in altitude, approach, acclimatisation and effort.

By the team Monterosa Booking, with guide UIAGM Monte Rosa

Anyone planning the climb to Capanna Margherita usually comes across the same question: is it better to sleep at Capanna Gnifetti or at Rifugio Mantova?

The most honest answer is that there is no better hut in absolute terms. Both are regularly used as bases for the ascent to Capanna Margherita and they are separated by only 149 metres of elevation gain. The real difference lies in how effort, elevation gain and walking time are distributed between the first and second day.

Two nearby huts, but not the same

Rifugio Mantova is located at 3,498 metres, while Capanna Gnifetti sits slightly higher, at 3,647 metres. Both huts are in the Garstelet area, above Punta Indren, at the entrance to the great glacial environment of Monte Rosa.

From the arrival point of the Punta Indren cable car, Rifugio Mantova can usually be reached in about 50 minutes, while Capanna Gnifetti takes around one hour and a half, with a total positive elevation gain of about 370 metres. Times may vary depending on snow conditions, the glacier and the pace of the group.

The difference may seem small, but during a high-altitude climb even 150 metres can matter.

Capanna Gnifetti: walking a little more on the first day

Capanna Gnifetti is one of the historic huts of Monte Rosa. It is located between the Garstelet Glacier and the Lys Glacier and has been one of the main starting points for ascents to the central summits of the massif for generations.

With 176 beds, it is a large and well-known hut, used not only by rope teams heading to Capanna Margherita, but also by climbers aiming for Piramide Vincent, Balmenhorn, Corno Nero, Ludwigshöhe, Punta Parrot and the more demanding peaks of the Monte Rosa group.

Choosing Capanna Gnifetti means covering a little more elevation gain during the afternoon of the first day. The following morning, you start about 150 metres higher, slightly reducing the length of the climb towards Capanna Margherita, which is normally reached in about four to five hours.

When Capanna Gnifetti may be the better choice

Capanna Gnifetti can be a good choice for those who already have a reasonable level of acclimatisation, are well trained and do not mind walking a little more on the first day. It may also suit those who prefer to reduce, even slightly, the elevation gain of the main summit day and want to enter immediately into the atmosphere of one of the classic mountaineering huts of Monte Rosa.

However, sleeping 149 metres higher does not turn the following day into a short outing. Capanna Margherita stands at 4,554 metres: there are still almost 1,000 metres of elevation gain, several hours on the glacier and, above all, the need to manage high altitude properly.

Rifugio Mantova: a more gradual first day

Rifugio Città di Mantova is located at 3,498 metres and is the first of the two huts you reach when coming up from Punta Indren.

It offers 120 beds in heated rooms and dormitories, with facilities, changing rooms and paid showers. The hut has been renovated to improve space and comfort for guests, while maintaining its role as a true high-altitude mountain hut.

Stopping at Mantova allows you to finish the approach sooner on the first day. This can be useful when you arrive in altitude in the afternoon, when the group needs to move calmly, or when you prefer not to add further elevation gain after travelling and taking the lifts.

The following morning, however, you will need to cover the 149 metres separating Mantova from Gnifetti and then join the route that climbs towards Colle del Lys and Capanna Margherita.

When Rifugio Mantova may be the better choice

Rifugio Mantova can be a good option for those spending their first night above 3,000 metres, for those who prefer a less demanding first day, or for those arriving from far away who want to reach the hut at a more relaxed pace.

It can also be useful in programmes where it is better to distribute the effort more gradually between the two days.

Sleeping slightly lower does not remove the possibility of headache, nausea, tiredness or difficulty sleeping. At this altitude, even a relatively small difference can be felt very differently from one person to another.

Which hut is better for acclimatisation?

Those who come directly from the lowlands and quickly gain altitude with the lifts cover a very significant elevation difference in just a few hours. The body needs time to adapt to the reduced oxygen, regardless of which hut is chosen.

Rifugio Mantova allows for a slightly more gradual arrival, while Capanna Gnifetti gives you the chance to spend the night at a higher altitude and observe how your body reacts already during the first afternoon. However, the most useful preparation happens before: spending time at altitude in the previous days, possibly sleeping above 2,500 or 3,000 metres, and doing an acclimatisation hike.

Neither hut can make up for insufficient preparation or for arriving too quickly at high altitude.

For this reason, before choosing the hut, it is also worth thinking about your preparation for climbing a 4000-metre peak.

Can you choose the hut on a guided climb?

On guided programmes to Capanna Margherita, the first night may be planned either at Capanna Gnifetti or at Rifugio Mantova. Both are regularly used as support huts for the climb.

The choice depends on several factors: hut availability, number of participants, guide organisation, arrival time, characteristics of the group and mountain conditions.

For this reason, especially on group departures, it is not always possible to choose in advance where you will spend the night. This does not mean receiving a better or worse programme: the distribution of effort changes slightly, but the main itinerary and objective remain the same.

On private departures there may be more flexibility, always depending on availability, logistics and the guide’s assessment.

So: is Gnifetti or Mantova better?

The answer can be summarised like this: Capanna Gnifetti means a little more walking on the first day and slightly less on the second; Rifugio Mantova means a shorter approach on the first day and a slightly lower start towards Capanna Margherita.

For someone who is already well trained and acclimatised, Capanna Gnifetti can be a natural choice. For those approaching high altitude for the first time, or for those who prefer a more gradual arrival, Rifugio Mantova can make the first afternoon easier.

The decisive factor, however, is not the name written on the hut booking. Training, acclimatisation, glacier conditions, weather and the ability to maintain a steady pace for several hours matter far more.

You do not reach Capanna Margherita because you slept in the “right” hut. You reach it when preparation, conditions and the pace of the rope team make it possible to continue safely.

And on the day of the climb, that assessment belongs to the guide.

Would you like to understand which programme suits you best?

Choosing between Capanna Gnifetti and Rifugio Mantova is only one part of the organisation. To climb Capanna Margherita, training, acclimatisation, the chosen period, glacier conditions and the type of experience you want to have all matter.

On Monterosa Booking you will find several guided programmes to Capanna Margherita: from the classic 2-day ascent to the overnight stay at the highest hut in Europe, as well as longer itineraries designed for those who want to approach Monte Rosa more gradually.

Frequently asked questions about Gnifetti, Mantova and Capanna Margherita

Is it better to sleep at Capanna Gnifetti or Rifugio Mantova?

There is no better choice in absolute terms. Capanna Gnifetti is located higher and slightly reduces the elevation gain on summit day, while Rifugio Mantova makes the first day of approach shorter and more gradual.

Capanna Gnifetti is located at 3,647 metres, while Rifugio Mantova is located at 3,498 metres. The difference is therefore 149 metres.

Sleeping at Capanna Gnifetti means spending the night at a slightly higher altitude, but 149 metres alone are not enough to guarantee good acclimatisation. How you arrive at altitude in the previous days matters much more.

Yes. From the arrival point of the Punta Indren lifts, Rifugio Mantova requires a shorter approach than Capanna Gnifetti. The following day, however, you need to cover the elevation gain separating the two huts.

On private departures there may be more flexibility, depending on hut availability and the organisation of the climb. On group departures, the hut is usually defined according to logistics, the group, the guides and availability.
