My goal

Not sure you are ready for the Capanna Margherita? Start with a trial day

If you are considering the ascent to the Capanna Margherita and have doubts about your preparation, spend a day on Monte Rosa with an IFMGA mountain guide.

This programme gives you the opportunity to gain your first experience in a glacial environment, become familiar with the technical equipment and assess whether your fitness level is suitable for the demands of the ascent.

During the day, you will learn how to use crampons, a harness and an ice axe correctly. You will also practise moving as part of a roped team on snow and ice, gaining the essential skills needed to feel more confident on the glacier.

Your guide will assess your pace, balance, coordination and ability to manage sustained physical effort. At the end of the day, you will receive an honest evaluation of your preparation and clear advice on how to proceed.

Have you already booked your ascent?

Add a trial day before your departure. Completing it around one week before the ascent will help you become familiar with the environment, begin the acclimatisation process and understand how your body responds to altitude.

When the day of your ascent arrives, you will already be familiar with the equipment and basic techniques, helping you set out with greater confidence and less anxiety.

The trial day does not include the ascent to the Capanna Margherita. It helps you understand what to expect and approach this objective with greater awareness, suitable preparation and the informed opinion of a local Monte Rosa mountain guide.

Who is this trial day for?

This programme is suitable if:

  • You are considering the Capanna Margherita and want to assess your preparation.
  • You have already booked and would like to approach the ascent feeling calmer and better prepared.
  • You have never used crampons or travelled as part of a roped team.
  • You want to feel more confident moving on snow and ice.

A reasonable level of fitness is required. Previous mountaineering experience is unnecessary, as your guide will teach you the essential techniques during the day.

Programme

You will meet your IFMGA mountain guide at 8:00 a.m. at Passo dei Salati. You can reach the meeting point from either Alagna or Gressoney by taking the first cable car at 7:30 a.m.

The day will begin with an initial briefing and an equipment check. Together with your guide, you will review the clothing and technical equipment required to take your first steps into mountaineering.

You will gradually become familiar with the glacial environment and learn how to put on and adjust your crampons and harness, use an ice axe correctly and move efficiently on snow and ice.

During the day, you will practise the essential techniques:

  • Walking uphill and downhill with crampons.
  • Maintaining your balance on different types of terrain.
  • Moving safely as part of a roped team.
  • Managing your pace and energy during sustained physical effort.
  • Observing how your body responds to altitude.

You will complete a short ascent chosen according to the weather, glacier conditions, your experience and your level of preparation. This will allow the guide to assess your pace, coordination, endurance and ability to move in a high-mountain environment.

Before returning, you will review the experience with your guide and receive an honest assessment of your preparation. You will understand which areas are already adequate and what you should work on before attempting the ascent to the Capanna Margherita.

The itinerary, duration and elevation gain will be determined according to the conditions on the day and the participants’ level.

One day to learn, assess your preparation and approach the Capanna Margherita with greater confidence and awareness.

Clothing and equipment

Summer conditions on Monte Rosa can change quickly. You will need layered technical clothing, protection from wind and rain, gloves, a warm hat, sunglasses and footwear suitable for the itinerary.

Depending on the programme, you may also need crampons, a harness, helmet, ice axe and trekking poles. You do not need to buy everything before booking: the activity page explains what is included, and after confirmation you will receive a complete kit list specific to your ascent.

To get started:

Mountaineering, ski touring, off-piste skiing and trekking take place in a natural, uncontrolled environment.
Weather conditions, snow, ice, terrain, visibility, altitude and physical fatigue can change rapidly and directly affect the course of the activity. For this reason, there is always an inherent level of objective risk, which cannot be eliminated but only managed.

All our activities are led by IFMGA Mountain Guides and Certified Hiking Guides (AMM).
The guide continuously assesses environmental conditions and the physical and mental state of participants, sets an appropriate pace, manages progression and ensures the correct use of equipment. If conditions require it, the guide may modify the itinerary or interrupt the activity, always in the interest of individual and group safety.

Participants are required to be in good physical and mental condition, adequately prepared for the level of the activity, and to follow the guide’s instructions at all times.

Group activities

During group outings, the pace is set according to the slowest participant. In case of fatigue or discomfort, the guide may decide to adjust the programme or return early. In the mountains, the group ascends and returns together.
