Stay Overnight at Capanna Margherita

Level: 2
Season: Summer
Duration: 3 days
Participants: Max 5

My goal

Sleeping at the Margherita Hut, at 4,554 metres on Punta Gnifetti, means spending a night at high altitude and approaching the climb more gradually than on the classic two-day programme.

The three-day format allows you to spread the effort more evenly, spend more time acclimatising and reach the hut at a more controlled pace. It is a good option for those who want to approach high altitude more progressively, without turning the ascent into a race against the clock.

The route takes place on the glaciers of Monte Rosa and requires good fitness, the ability to walk for several hours and a willingness to adapt to the effects of altitude. To prepare, you can read our guide to training for the Margherita Hut.

Your IFMGA Mountain Guide manages the pace, progression and programme, continuously assessing glacier conditions, weather and each participant’s response to altitude.

Once you reach the Margherita Hut, the rhythm of the day changes. You stay at 4,554 metres until the following morning, experiencing the sunset, the night and the start of the next day directly from the highest mountain hut in Europe.

The goal is not simply to sleep at 4,554 metres, but to reach that altitude with enough time and margin to manage it well.

Day 1

We will meet at Passo dei Salati at 2:30 PM, where you will meet the guide and receive the necessary equipment. From here, we will take the lifts to Punta Indren and begin our ascent on foot towards the refuge (Capanna Gnifetti or Rifugio Città di Mantova). We will arrive around 4:00 PM, taking the route slowly, making stops to acclimatize and enjoy the scenery. Dinner and overnight stay at the refuge.

Day 2

At dawn, our real adventure begins: we will ascend roped together towards Capanna Margherita. With calm and determination, we will reach the summit by mid-morning. We’ll enjoy a light lunch and some relaxation in one of the most incredible places in Europe, waiting to experience the magic of sunset over the peaks. Dinner and overnight stay at the Capanna, under a starry sky that feels within reach.

Day 3

After breakfast with a breathtaking view, we will start our descent. Along the way, we will pass by Cristo delle Vette and Pyramid Vincent, two majestic peaks over 4,000 meters. We will reach Indren, where we will take the lifts down to Passo dei Salati and conclude our adventure in Alagna or Gressoney. A journey filled with emotions and breathtaking views that will remain in our hearts forever.

For the climb to the Margherita Hut, you will need:

  • mountaineering clothing suitable for high altitude and changing weather
  • mountaineering boots
  • 30–35 litre backpack
  • category 3 or 4 sunglasses
  • SPF 50+ sunscreen
  • protective lip balm

Crampons, harness and helmet are provided by us when required for the programme.

After booking, we will send you a complete equipment list covering clothing, technical gear and the personal items you need to bring. This allows you to prepare specifically for the programme and the conditions expected during your climb.

Mountaineering, ski touring, off-piste skiing and trekking take place in a natural, uncontrolled environment.
Weather conditions, snow, ice, terrain, visibility, altitude and physical fatigue can change rapidly and directly affect the course of the activity. For this reason, there is always an inherent level of objective risk, which cannot be eliminated but only managed.

All our activities are led by IFMGA Mountain Guides and Certified Hiking Guides (AMM).
The guide continuously assesses environmental conditions and the physical and mental state of participants, sets an appropriate pace, manages progression and ensures the correct use of equipment. If conditions require it, the guide may modify the itinerary or interrupt the activity, always in the interest of individual and group safety.

Participants are required to be in good physical and mental condition, adequately prepared for the level of the activity, and to follow the guide’s instructions at all times.

Group activities

During group outings, the pace is set according to the slowest participant. In case of fatigue or discomfort, the guide may decide to adjust the programme or return early. In the mountains, the group ascends and returns together.

FAQ #1 – Will I get altitude sickness?

It is possible. The Margherita Hut sits at 4,554 metres, and altitude can cause headaches, nausea, fatigue or other symptoms even in very fit people. The three-day programme gives you more time to acclimatise and spreads the effort over several days, but everyone responds differently to altitude. Your IFMGA Mountain Guide monitors the group throughout the climb and can adjust the pace or programme when needed.

FAQ #2 – What happens if I feel unwell during the climb?

Tell your guide as soon as you start feeling unwell. At high altitude, symptoms should not be ignored or pushed through simply to keep going. Your IFMGA Mountain Guide will assess the situation and decide whether to slow down, stop, change the programme or descend, depending on your condition and the conditions on the mountain.

FAQ #3 – Can I join a group if I am travelling alone?

Yes. You can book a place on a three-day group departure with an overnight stay at the Margherita Hut even if you are travelling on your own. You will join other participants, subject to the minimum and maximum group size required for the departure.

FAQ #4 – Do I need a sleeping bag for the Margherita Hut?

No, you do not need a traditional sleeping bag. A sleeping bag liner is compulsory in the hut. We recommend bringing a lightweight, reusable one that is easy to carry in your backpack during the climb.

FAQ #5 – What happens if I do not reach the Margherita Hut? Will I get a refund?

Reaching the Margherita Hut cannot be guaranteed. Weather, glacier conditions, altitude, acclimatisation or the condition of an individual participant may make it necessary to change or stop the programme. If the guide decides that continuing is not appropriate, the guiding service has still been provided and no refund is due solely because the objective was not reached.

FAQ #6 – How fit do I need to be for the three-day programme?

You need good physical fitness and experience walking for several hours. The three-day programme spreads the effort more gradually than a faster ascent, but it does not remove the effects of altitude. Above 4,000 metres, your pace naturally slows and even moderate effort can feel much harder. Arriving well prepared will help you manage the climb, the overnight stay and the descent more comfortably.
