For glacier ski touring, IFAGM guides accompany a maximum of 5 skiers per guide, ensuring safety and personalized attention.

  • Monte Rosa guides may adjust itineraries and activity schedules based on weather conditions, the accessibility of mountain huts, and the participants’ physical fitness.
  • The planned periods for activities may vary due to weather conditions and the state of the terrain (snow coverage, ground conditions, etc.).

Ski touring requires a combination of technical skills and physical endurance.

  • Ability to ski on a black slope: while being able to ski on a black slope is not strictly necessary for ski touring, having solid downhill skiing technique is highly recommended. Off-piste conditions can be even more challenging than a black slope, with untracked, crusty, powdery, or icy snow.
  • Physical endurance: ski touring is a sport that demands significant stamina. Ascents can be long and challenging, often with substantial altitude gain. Having overall physical fitness and good cardiovascular endurance is essential.
  • Leg strength: strong legs are crucial, not only for ascending with skins but also for managing descents on challenging terrain. Specific training exercises such as squats, lunges, and calf raises can be very beneficial.
  • Respiratory capacity: excellent respiratory capacity is vital, especially at higher altitudes where oxygen levels are lower. Activities like running, cycling, or swimming can improve aerobic capacity and endurance.

In summary, while the ability to ski on a black slope demonstrates solid technical preparation, ski touring also requires comprehensive physical conditioning and the ability to adapt to the variable conditions of the mountains.
