My goal

The Capanna Margherita trekking  on foot in 5 days, without using lifts, is a true life achievement. It’s a journey that combines physical strength and passion, aimed at climbing Monte Rosa and reaching the highest refuge in Europe.

Reaching Capanna Margherita from Alagna offers you a wonderful experience, where time seems to stand still. Walking at a natural pace allows you to acclimatize gradually, discovering every corner of the mountain step by step.

Nights spent in refuges, the green meadows of Otro, Lake Gabiet, and the Stolemberg moraine will prepare you to appreciate every moment above 4000 meters. You’ll learn that the true adventure lies not just in the destination but in the journey you undertake to get there.

Read here our tips for preparing consciously for the Capanna Margherita trekking.

The price includes: IFMGA mountain guide for 4 days, half board for the trekking from the dinner on the first day, transfer of high mountain equipment to Passo dei Salati, technical equipment (harness and crampons).

Not included in the price: accident insurance (recommended), meals not specified for yourself and the guide, and everything not listed under “the price includes.”

Day 1
From 1100 m to 1800 m

Meeting in Alagna by 2:00 PM at the Alagna.it MonterosaBooking Centre. Equipment check, distribution of technical materials, and division of gear for trekking and mountaineering. We will start with our backpacks containing only the essentials for the first days of trekking. Ascend independently in the Val d’Otro towards the Zar Senni refuge. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2
From 1800 m to 2,800 m and descent to 2500 m

Meeting with the guide after breakfast and ascending towards the high passes of Val d’Otro and Colle Zube, where grass gives way to moss and lichens yield to rocks. We will then descend to the Lys Valley until we reach the Gabiet refuge. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3
From 2800 m to 3650 m

The goal of the day: Capanna Gnifetti, following the trails trodden by climbers over the centuries on the southern slope of Monte Rosa. At Passo dei Salati, we will meet a representative from the agency who will provide the necessary moutaineering equipment and take the trekking gear back down to allow us to ascend to the higher peaks with a lighter backpack and the essential technical gear.

Day 4
From 3650 m to 4554 m

Departure at dawn towards Capanna Margherita. The group will reach the summit by mid-morning. Light lunch and well-deserved rest while waiting to witness the magic of the sunset over the peaks. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5
After breakfast, return to the valley passing by the Cristo delle Vette and then the Mantova refuge, descending to Alagna. For those who wish, it will be possible to take the cable car back to Alagna using the Monterosaski lifts.

Light hiking gear for the first 2 days of the trek, lightweight boots or sneakers. On the third day, we will meet a representative from the agency at Passo dei Salati who will facilitate an easy backpack swap so we can ascend as lightly as possible.

In your second backpack, don’t forget:

– 5 layers of clothing for the upper body (thermal shirt, light fleece, heavy fleece, down jacket, anorak.)
– two set of gloves (soft and ski ones)
– sunglasses (with 3 or 4 protection)
– heavy trousers (windproof)
– underpants
– gaiters
– rigid, ankle height, waterproof boots.
– two pair of ski socks
– headlamp
– hat that covers your ears
– sun screen & lip balm
– poles
– ice axe (if are used to it)
– helmet is recommended but not compulsory
– 1lt water bottle/thermos
– harness & crampons
– sleeping bag liner

If you have any doubts about the necessary equipment, click here! You’ll find a detailed guide and links to products recommended by the Monte Rosa Guides.

ATTENTION: The sleeping bag liner is mandatory in all shelters. We recommend a lightweight but, above all, reusable sleeping bag liner. Let’s protect the mountains from waste. We use this one.

The ascent to Capanna Margherita is accessible to anyone who is well-trained and capable of handling continuous climbs of 4 to 5 hours. The ideal preparation for your training sessions includes a vertical speed of 300 to 350 meters of elevation gain per hour.

The hike does not present particular technical difficulties, but it takes place entirely on glacial terrain typical of high mountains. There are no exposed sections or ridges to traverse. Some short stretches of easy via ferrata lead to Capanna Gnifetti and Cristo delle Vette. It involves a long trek on snow and ice, with occasionally steep slopes tackled in a rope team for the safety of the entire group.

Remember that the more gradual the acclimatization, the more effective it is: if you don’t have much time and your choice is a 2-day trip, consider staying at least one night before the ascent at Gressoney or Alagna.

Note: Ascents to Capanna Margherita are permitted with a maximum of 5 climbers per UIAGM mountain guide.

FAQ #1 – Will I suffer from altitude sickness?
High altitude can cause altitude sickness, with symptoms such as headaches, nausea, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating. Gradual acclimatization helps reduce the risk and intensity of symptoms. Being in good physical shape and well-trained makes the experience less exhausting.
FAQ #2 – Are there any medications that can help with altitude sickness?
Altitude sickness is highly subjective, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. It is advisable to bring only the headache and nausea medications that you are already familiar with and have used before. Nevertheless, we recommend consulting your primary healthcare provider for personalized advice
FAQ #3 – What happens if I feel unwell during the ascent?
If you feel unwell in the hut, we will organize an early descent. In the case of severe discomfort during the hike, we will turn back. In the event of severe illness, the guide will alert the rescue services, and you will be taken to the hospital by helicopter.
FAQ #4 – Can I join a group if I’m alone?
Certainly! Choose your experience from the group hikes page by clicking here
FAQ #5 – Do I need a sleeping bag?
No, Monterosa’s refuges provide pillows, duvets, or blankets! However, the use of a sleeping bag liner is mandatory, and you can purchase it for a minimal cost at specialized stores. Click here for more information (affiliate link)
FAQ #6 – Can I rent high mountain clothing and equipment?
You can rent equipment (boots, poles, ice axe) in Alagna, Gressoney and Champoluc. However, it will not be possible to rent clothing.
FAQ #7 – If I do not reach the summit, will I be refunded?
No, no refund is provided.
FAQ #8 – What is the required fitness level for the excursion?
To successfully complete this experience, you need good physical endurance and training that allows you to sustain at least 4/5 hours of uphill walking plus the same amount in descent. Preparing with specific training will help you tackle the challenges of the route and fully enjoy the adventure.
